My journey with eNett has been an incredible one. From what started as an idea pitch in the back of a taxi, to growing into a disruptive start-up and eventually becoming a leader in B2B travel payments as we are today. Over the years, I’ve adapted, grown and been challenged; yet 2020 has been the most testing of them all. Last month our company celebrated its 11th anniversary. As I reflect on the milestone, I wanted to share some of the most important lessons I’ve learnt over the years and some tips which I believe are vital for any company’s success:
Always hire the best people. The past 11 years have taught me that you’re only as good as the team around you. It’s important to take the time and effort to find and hire awesome people – believe me, it will pay dividends. I’ve learnt to not be afraid to hire people better than you. I always say, “if you’re the smartest person in the room, you’re in the wrong room.”
Cultivate a good culture. And nurture it. Hire people who will genuinely fit in and support the culture of your company and brand. From a small ‘start-up’ in 2009, to a global company of over 250 people, our business has nurtured a “fun” and “bold” culture, whereby our people feel empowered to bring their best and have good time while doing so. This is achieved by hosting regular social activities, offering substantial learning and development opportunities and a flexible working environment. A well-stocked beer fridge helps, too. Employee engagement is integral to customer experience, so it’s really a win-win for everyone.
Stay close and listen to customers. This may seem obvious, but it’s key. Providing a good customer experience has always been at the core of our business and is a huge factor in eNett’s success. In the current climate, it’s more important than ever for businesses to tighten their grip on their CX strategy, so your customers and ultimately your business, can bounce-back fitter, faster and stronger.
Invest in good tech. And keep doing so. This is not just an important lesson for obvious reasons, such as product reliability, safety and speed. But also, because keeping up-to-date with current tech innovation has allowed our business to continue to innovate, grow and adapt over the years and maintain our position as leaders in the industry.
Give back. Over the years, our CSR Programme, Repay the eNett Way, has helped multiple communities in underprivileged regions around the world and has been the most rewarding business lesson of them all. Having the opportunity to not only give donations, but also to make a hands-on difference through volunteer work, has been beneficial to our employee experience and ultimately helped those who need it most.
Flexible working really works. This is something I have always believed. Our team has always been setup with the flexibility to work from home when they need. However, with this year triggering a completely unprecedented way of working- having the entire office at home – I’ve realised that there are ways that we could improve this even further. It’s truly worked having everyone at home at the same time. As a business, we’re as effective and productive as we always have been. And so I’m beginning to learn from this and think about what the future-of-work looks like for eNett.
Keep thinking about what’s next. Keeping your finger on the pulse is so important. Over the years, we transitioned from challenger to industry leader because we anticipated trends like greater digitisation and more global travel, and amended our product offering to meet them well ahead of time. Right now, while our industry is being impacted by the government-imposed travel restrictions, our team is busy looking to the future - focusing on what the next trends will look like, preparing for the ‘bounce-back’ and adapting as required.
I believe it’s important for all businesses to reflect and lean on what they know and use it to their advantage in order to continue to remain strong, especially when a curveball, such as the current pandemic, is thrown into the mix.
eNett has had an incredibly successful journey over the past 11 years. One that I’m proud to have been part of. Having been a CEO and Managing Director for this amount of time has me taught an incredible amount. Yet the learning never stops. I’m grateful for the experience I’ve gained and hope that by sharing these tips, other business may learn something too.
